Dose of Cynthia: You Thought Feeling Better Meant You Were Healed. That’s Adorable.
I love you. I do.
But some of you feel one good week and immediately fire your entire support system.
The sun comes out. You slept three decent nights. You didn’t spiral at that one text. You regulated through one hard conversation. And suddenly you’re like:
“I’m healed.”
No. You’re regulated.
There is a difference.
Feeling better is a state. Healing is a pattern.
A good mood is not proof of integration. It is proof that your nervous system is not under immediate threat. That’s great. We like that. We want that.
But you cannot graduate from maintenance because you had a stable Tuesday.
This is where people quietly sabotage themselves.
They feel good. They stop therapy. They loosen boundaries. They skip routines. They drink more because “I’m fine now.” They overcommit because “I have energy again.” They abandon the very systems that helped them feel better in the first place.
Then stress hits. Because life does not send calendar invites before it destabilizes you. And suddenly everything feels worse than it did before.
Not because you regressed.
Because you dismantled your scaffolding.
Healing is not the absence of symptoms. It is the presence of skills under pressure.
If you only regulate when things are calm, that’s not resilience. That’s circumstance.
I need you to understand something deeply: maintenance is not optional just because you feel okay.
Maintenance is the reason you feel okay.
Also, let’s be honest about something else.
Sometimes when you feel better, you get uncomfortable.
Calm can feel unfamiliar. Peace can feel boring. Stability can feel like stagnation if you built your identity around crisis or intensity. So you create motion. You add pressure. You stir something up.
Because at least chaos feels alive.
Growth is quieter than you think.
It’s not dramatic reinvention. It’s not the aesthetic morning routine. It’s not the public declaration.
It’s repeating the unsexy thing that works even when you don’t feel like you need it.
That’s adulthood. That’s nervous system maturity. That’s capacity.
So no, one good week does not mean you are done.
It means what you’re doing is working.
And the move is not to escalate.
The move is to protect it.
Everyday Implementation To-Do
Since I refuse to let you romanticize stability without structure:

Identify one system that helped you feel better this month.

Commit to keeping it for 30 more days.

Do not add a new goal until you’ve maintained the current one for at least four weeks.

When you feel “fine,” double-check your boundaries instead of loosening them.

Ask yourself weekly: Am I maintaining or am I coasting?
You are allowed to feel good.
You are not allowed to sabotage it because it feels unfamiliar.
